"Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us — for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree” — so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith." - Galatians 3:13-14

In the apostle Paul's letter to the church at Galatia (modern day Turkey), he explains the significance of the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. One of the reasons why his death is so important is because by dying, Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law. All of humanity is cursed by God because of the disobedience of Adam, our representative in the Garden of Eden. It is because of his original sin, that all of us as his children have inherited sin, guilt and death. In his death on the cross, Christ frees us from the consequences of Adam's disobedience by becoming a curse for us who believe. In other words, because of his great love, Christ took upon himself our sin, guilt and death at his crucifixion (hanging on a tree) and therefore became a curse for us. Why did he do this? Well, Paul explains "so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith." It is through faith in Christ alone, that the promised blessing of God's presence is given to humanity.

So how does this apply to your life? This passage from the Bible means that Jesus Christ is the only Redeemer you will ever need. You don't have to search any longer. Through his substitutionary atoning death on the cross, he has purchased your freedom from sin, guilt and death. Because of the cross, the presence of sin in your life will one day be no more. Because of the cross, your guilty standing before God the Father has been upended and you have been declared righteous in Christ. Because of the cross, your death will only be a gateway to eternal life. Because of the cross, you have become the temple of God's Spirit. Sin has been slain. Guilt has been gutted. Death has been destroyed. The Spirit has been given. The curse has been reversed. Hallelujah, what a Savior!

For Jesus,

Pastor Mark
