"Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned — every one — to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all." - Isaiah 53:4–6

In the sixth through seventh century B.C., the prophet Isaiah wrote this book to announce good news to God's wayward people in Judah. The Jewish people found themselves under the rule of the Babylonians at this time. They are being challenged by Isaiah to decide whether or not they will trust in themselves or in the Lord, the God who promised them a future filled with hope. Isaiah promises that one day, One will come who will be a king like David, a servant of the Lord, who will preach good news and destroy evil forever. Yet, this One would do so by suffering for the sake of his people: bearing their griefs, carrying their sorrows, being pierced for their transgressions, being crushed for their iniquities, being chastised and wounded. Jesus Christ would later come to fulfill this promise, suffering on behalf of sinners through his life, death and resurrection to restore them to God fully and forever.

So what does this have to do with you? It means that if you are trusting in Jesus Christ by faith today, he suffered for you so you won't have to; he bore your grief so you won't have to; he carried your sorrows so you won't have to; he was pierced for your transgressions so you won't have to be; and he was chastised and wounded so you won't have to be. Jesus Christ is God's message of hope for sinners like you. He is the great Liberator, the Savior, who has come to free you from sin, guilt and death by taking the punishment that you deserve upon himself. Though you like sheep have gone astray, God the Father has laid on Jesus Christ his Son - your iniquity, your sins, your disobedience so that you might be forgiven. This Jesus is worthy of your worship, your praise and your thanksgiving. May you live in the freedom he purchased for you now and always.

For Jesus,

Pastor Mark
