"Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable."
- Psalm 145:3

In his praise, worship and honor of the Lord, the psalmist here celebrates how God's greatness is unsearchable. In doing so, he is referring to a doctrine that theologians have identified in Scripture as the incomprehensibility of God. What does it mean to say that God is incomprehensible? It means that while God has clearly revealed himself to us through his Word (the Bible), he has not fully revealed everything there is to know about who he is, his purposes or plans. As someone once put it, if you could fully understand God, you would be God. As humans created in his image, we were made to know him in so far as he has chosen to graciously reveal himself but no further. In other words, there are limitations set by the Lord himself on our knowledge of who he is. He is the incomprehensible God.

So what does this mean for your everyday life? It means that whatever the Lord has chosen to say to you about himself through Scripture, you can take to the bank. You can rely on it and be confident that whatever he has told you is trustworthy and true. Yet whatever he has not said about who he is, his purposes or plans, you ought to rest content with Scripture. You should let what he has told you inform what he has not told you. Get comfortable with mystery. Become accustomed to not knowing everything there is to know. Following Jesus does not mean you'll learn everything there is to know about God but it does mean you'll experience the joy that comes from knowing everything he wants you to know about himself.

For Jesus,
Pastor Mark
