The Unchanging God

“For I, the Lord, do not change.”
- Malachi 3:6

Over time, people, places and things change. We all eventually develop wrinkles, our hair turns gray, our bones shrink, our muscles lose their strength, and we slow down. Yet unlike those he has created in his image, the Lord, the God of the Bible does not change. Theologian Louis Berkhof explains it this way, “It is that perfection of God by which He is devoid of all change, not only in His Being, but also in His perfections, and in His purposes and promises.” His love, knowledge, and power do not alter. His aims or goals for all of creation do not transform. His statements about the future through his prophets, apostles and ultimately through Jesus Christ do not change. In all of these ways and more, the Lord is uniquely the unchangeable God.

What does this have to do with your life? Because the Lord does not change, you can trust him. Because the Lord does not alter, you can believe that he is reliable, dependable and faithful to who he says he is and what he says he will do. Because the Lord does not transform, you don’t have to worry about God ceasing to be God. Because the Lord does not change, you don’t have to be afraid that he will change his mind about saving you from sin through Jesus. Because the Lord does not alter, you don’t have to be anxious that he will stop knowing the future. Because the Lord does not transform, you don’t have to feel concerned that he will stop loving you. People will indeed change. Your community, country and world will change. Your job, house and car may change. Yet the Lord, the Creator and Sustainer of all things in heaven and on earth, is unlike his creation in that he does not change. As Corrie Ten Boom wrote, “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.”

For Jesus,
Pastor Mark
