"All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work."
- 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Oftentimes, when we use the word "inspired" or "inspiration," we are referring to feeling emotionally moved by something, like when you witness a sunset or see a beautiful painting. Yet when the Church refers to the doctrine of the inspiration of the Bible, it is not referring to our emotions or feelings but is instead referring to the fact that Scripture itself has been breathed out by God the Holy Spirit. This means that Scripture is both simultaneously the words of human beings and yet also the Word of God himself. So when Scripture speaks, God speaks. What the Bible says, God says. As Lesslie Newbigin wrote, "The Christian story provides us with a set of lenses, not something for us to look at, but for us to look through."

So what does this have to do with your life? As the apostle Paul explained to Timothy in our passage, Scripture is profitable. In other words, God had you in mind when he inspired or breathed his Word through the writers of the Bible. He had your ultimate good in mind - your relationship with God, your relationship with your spouse, your relationship with your kids, your relationship with your friends, your work, etc. He gave us Scripture so that we would be taught - because we have a lot to learn. He gave it to us so we would be reproved - because we have faults. He gave it to us so we would be corrected - because we're often in need of it. He gave it to us so we would be trained in righteousness - because we need to learn how to live just lives in his world. He gave it to us so we would be complete, equipped for every good work. So if you want to know God's will for your life, get to know his Word. Take and read. It's all you need to know to glorify him in this life.

For Jesus,
Pastor Mark
